Don't miss out on what's happening around you! Click here. The first time I noticed, was when one of my ex-partners of the tour company we had, we went to find licenses for the new offices in that country.
Getting to the addresses we saw in the list that the real estate agent had sent us was impossible without someone living in the city, because not only had to know the things that were there and where they were, but also those that no longer existed. As well? So if they say north, it means go 3 blocks north.
If they tell you N, E, go 3 blocks north and 5 blocks east. Odd distances like meters mean the place you're looking for is either a block and a half away, or there's an odd city block that measures less than usual.
Sometimes it happens, and they'll tell you " meters" so you don't get confused by the shorter block. When you get a mid-point direction, for example SE or NE, that's usually because the street is on a diagonal. Just follow the road in that general direction and don't worry about it. You'll probably also get a description of the building you're looking for, to help you pinpoint it. They'll tell you how many floors, what color the walls are, or what color the bars on the windows are really!
Most people in the metro area guide themselves by stuff on the horizon, or by knowing in what general direction different cities are. So for example if you know what direction Cartago is in, you know east. If you know what direction Heredia is in, you know north.
The opposite is also true: if you can see the downtown area buildings and you know where they're at, you have your reference. In rural areas, you're going to have a bit more trouble with directions. In those cases you're better off using a GPS.
Use Google Earth to search for your destination, copy the GPS coordinates, and load them into your unit. Addresses are coming to Costa Rica slowly but surely… In a marketing company announce with great fanfare that it had made an agreement with the government to put signs on every street in Costa Rica by the end of the year at no cost to the government.
They would find sponsors to put an advertisement on one half of the sign and the street name on the other half. Where the government has failed communities have started their own initiatives. Logically it would be the road running parallel to Playa Hermosa, but in fact it heads off into the mountains….
In La Fortuna Arenal despite the fact that there are only a couple of dozen streets in the whole town the Banco Nacional is on the corner of th street and st avenue. Perhaps it is some misguided attempt to use an official highway department nationwide naming convention? How do you find the right house in Costa Rica?
It is not customary in Costa Rica to number the houses like they do in other countries. I strongly recommend doing this so people can find your new house in Costa Rica easily. Typically, an address will first say so many meters north and so many west. No matter where you live, near a Costa Rican beach or in the city, you will hear the weirdest directions. But once you follow the directions, you will see how easy it is.
If you are not familiar with a city where you are looking for a certain address, or you have been away for a long time, you will need a map or a GPS to be able to find anything. Not in Costa Rica, the system is very simple. You only need to speak a bit of Spanish and not be afraid of asking around.
The easy way of finding an address in Costa Rica is to first find the city or town. Then see if you can find the landmark on your own or ask anybody for the landmark.
