Overall, an enjoyable FPS worth picking up and playing even today. However, the gameplay is great. Much better than the first one.
Combat is gory, the gunplay is flashy and fun. A huge advantage this game has is its length. Length is always a problem for me in linear games like this, but The Darkness 2 paced just perfectly, with a pretty effective story and storytelling.
My first playthrough was a long time ago with a pirated version. Cool game! Also, I wasn't a giant fan of the "stealth" sections with monkey, or the lack of the open world, but I do think this game is better than the first. Even though it's kind of short, it still is a lot of fun to whip people around with your tentacles and dual-wield although it unfortunately seems as though the "quad-wielding" wasn't referring to actually holding 4 guns at the same time.
I may change this down to a 3. Never overstayed its welcome, but much longer and it would have started to get repetitive. Impressive that controlls were so good at PC.
The story of Darkness 2 pulls you in very quickly. I truly did want to progress in the game because of how involved I got with the plot. Being able to control 2 guns and 2 deadly serpents attached at your shoulders at the same time makes for some killer combos and devastating enemy deaths. The game is very brutal with serpent deaths. Tearing off heads and ripping in half is just a taste. Being that the game is called Darkness, you need to stay in the shadows as the light will disable your serpents and make it difficult to see to fire on your enemies.
This effect is truly disabling and you will not survive fighting in the light for long. You can collect various amounts of essence by killing enemies which you can trade in for various skills that will improve your character.
Graphics and environments are stylized and really nicely done. It fits right in with the story. Sound and voice acting are top notch. The Italian mob voices are fantastic and each character is unique. It was always a pleasure to hear dialogue back and forth between everyone.
This game has a lot going on for in-game sound. Controls…they take getting used to. I tried this game using a mouse and keyboard but I found myself struggling. Switching to a controller instantly corrected everything BUT the learning curve is still moderate. Stability and FPS are rock solid. Never crashed once on Windows 8. Correct blurry view bug Many times during the game my view would become slightly blurry. Like the game forgot to reset back the focus.
The simple fix when that happens was to take a screenshot. It fixed it instantly each time. Jackie is more witty than he really should be, and the writing isn't that bad at times. The ending twist was expected, and the story will never be wrapped up. Thanks, 2K. Bit short but doesnt hang around long enough to go stale. Max Payne noiry bs with occult poo poo.
The story is dark, but not really as dark as the first game, still good though. Love how it never really tells you directly what's going on so you're constantly interested in what's gonna happen next. Overall, a great and unique fps that I would highly recommend, even over 5 years after release. Quad wielding has never been this good. I really liked the voice acting as well. Gameplay is varied and enjoyable, story is engaging and interesting and along with the look and the feel it seems like a cross between The Crow and Spawn with a bit of a gangster genre thrown in.
Apparently it was based on some comic books, so go figure. This game makes amazing use of all four shoulder buttons that is hard to wrap my head around. Obviously I need to get better at using more fingers to play games like this. I got stuck sometimes on the objects in the game, and the controls for the tentacles were somewhat slow to respond in some cases.
Graphics were OK I played on best settings , but I think it focused on a more stylistic look. Length was short but fit the story well: not too short to tell it and not too long to make it boring. Character design was good as well. The combat in the later part of the game feels a bit repetitive, but the length is just short enough before letting you get bored. Loved the art style. Everything this game does it does almost perfectly - the combat, the dialog and story, the art style, the voice acting.
All of it was superb. I didn't notice any glitches or bad gameplay elements. In short, the whole game was just a blast to play. Really pulled me in. Am I the only one feeling that way? There's a reason why Skyrim - an entirely single player game - is, almost two months after release, still holding the 4th spot in most played Xbox Live game. Pretend there are awe-inspiring lyrics or oh-so-hilarious quotations here, please.
User Info: Kagasuper. I put in about hours. Maybe that's because I took my time and tried to explore every corner and every conversation. It's definitely longer than COD though.
User Info: Awesomebrand. If the solo campaign averages at about 6 hours and the co-op mode around 2 as I've heard, totaling at 8 hours, and you play through several times to maximize the skill stuff People also seem to forget that this game will have DLC. Maybe this will extend playtime even more.
Shame, but that's how it is. Perhaps happychappy is so crappy because he missed his little nappy. User Info: jaser I thought it was about the right length. MAYBE a bit on the short side, but it's not as bad as some people are making it out to be. I spent about hours on the single player, and while it is technically shorter than the first game, keep in mind that The Darkness II is a VERY focused game i.
If you crit-pathed the first game, you'd probably beat it in about the same about of time. On my 4th playthrough. Story is put together way to good. Friggin love it. User Info: DarkWolf SkytheWiz1 posted Most arcade games only last about 2 hours for 15 or 20 bucks! This is a call for a worldwide internet and physical protest against the powers that be.
